American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control Report 2007
Did your state make the grade on Tobacco Control this year? The American Lung Association has released its annual State of Tobacco Control report grading all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, on their policies to reduce tobacco addiction, diseases and death. Find out if your state has the policies in place to get the job done.
The American Lung Association’s State of Tobacco Control 2007 report also grades the federal government. This year they only earned Ds and Fs. But 2008 presents an historic opportunity for Congress to make a dramatic impact on tobacco control across America by authorizing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate tobacco products. Strong, bipartisan legislation is pending in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives that would give the FDA authority over the manufacture, distribution, marketing and use of tobacco products.
Each year, 438,000 people die of tobacco related illness in the U.S -- more than 1200 a day. This costs Americans $167 billion in healthcare costs and lost productivity every year. The American Lung Association is fighting for your lung health -- by advocating for stronger tobacco control laws, funding programs to keep children from smoking, and helping thousands of people quit smoking each year. But we cannot do it without the support of people like you. Please make a secure donation online today.
Then, please tell your friends to check out how their state compared to the rest of the country, and to ask for their support to halt tobacco marketing to kids. Thank you
